100 Years of Duke Basketball

$100.93

No college in America has dominated the basketball scene over the past 20 years like Duke has. The Blue Devils have been to 10 Final Fours under Coach Mike Krzyzewski, winning the national championship three times. Al McGuire September 7, 1928 in New York City-January 26, 2001 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin coached the Marquette University men’s basketball team from 1964 to 1977. He compiled impressive numbers throughout his coaching career, resulting in his induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, and was also well known for his colorful personality. He played three years of basketball at St. John’s Prep., Queens, New York (graduated 1947), and went on to star at St. John’s University (1947-1951), where he played for four years and captained the 1951 team that posted a 26-5 mark and finished third in the NIT. After college, McGuire played in the NBA, first with the New York Knicks (1951-53) and then with the Baltimore Bullets (1954). While with the Knicks, he once famously pleaded with his coach for playing time, with this guarantee: “I can stop (Bob) Cousy.” Inserted into the lineup, McGuire proceeded to foul Cousy on his next six trips down the court.

Alcoa, incorporated in 1919 and located in Blount County, was established by Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) officials who desired to create a residential community for employees. The company was drawn to the area because of the abundance of waterpower resources. The Little Tennessee River and its tributaries were considered a good source of the hydroelectric energy essential to the production of aluminum. Alcoa was among the first planned communities in the state and the first municipalities in the nation to adopt a city manager commission government. Alcoa was home to Wade Houston, former University of Tennessee basketball coach, and was the birthplace of NFL Hall of Fame member Lynn Swann. Boasting the worlds largest factory under one roof during World War II, the city has established a record of excellence in industrial production, quality community life, education, and athletics.

In addition to calling fouls with flair, he was known for ejecting players from games with style and he sometimes supported his rulings with physical force. Over the course of his career, he officiated 2,400 professional basketball regular season games, 295 playoff games, seven All-Star games, and 29 NBA and ABA Finals. For his extensive contributions to the game, Strom was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. Strom was born December 15, 1927 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania to Max and Bessie Strom. Earl’s father, Max, was a foreman at a bakery, and Earl grew up in the household as the youngest of seven children comprising five boys and two girls. As a child, he became interested in athletics and competing in sports, and this interest lasted throughout his childhood and into high school. At Pottstown High School, Strom played football, baseball, and basketball. After finishing high school in 1945, he joined the United States Coast Guard towards the end of World War II. Returning from service, Strom attended Pierce Junior College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he graduated in 1951. Following school, the young Strom continued participating in sports and played for a local semi-professional basketball team in his early 20s. Durin… More:

 BASKETBALL and Life

BASKETBALL and Life

$9.99

Utilizing the myriad of experiences and people he has met and worked with in a six-decades career as the Official Scorer for the New Jersey Nets of the NBA, Herb Turetzky has authored a collection of poems which will make the reader feel as if he/she is actually taking part in this wonderful life, going back to the beginning of the author’s involvement with basketball in the blue-collar Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. Along the way, as the author makes his readers feel almost as if they, too, are sitting courtside working with some of the greatest athletes in the world, readers will get the feeling of winning team championships, being installed in numerous Halls of Fame, and forming relationships with such storied athletes as Shaquille O’Neal, Michael Jordan and Julius “Dr. J” Erving. In short, for even the most casual fan of the game of basketball or almost any Brooklynite, you will find BASKETBALL and Life to be a MUST-READ book, one you will remember for years to come.

Babe’s strength and athleticism brought the game of women’s golf to new levels, and the LPGA — which she co-founded — opened up worlds of opportunity for other women golfers. This is the compelling, story of one of the world’s greatest athletes.

 Bad As I Wanna Be

Bad As I Wanna Be

$7.99

A wild ride inside the glowing head of Dennis Rodman–the NBA’s greatest rebounder and America’s most outspoken and outrageous athlete. When Sports Illustrated put the man they call America’s most provocative athlete on their cover, they sold more copies than any other issue they had sold in a decade (except the swimsuit issue). Why? Because Dennis Rodman, superstar basketball player who joined the Chicago Bulls for the 1996 season, has more in common with Mick Jagger than with his new teammate Michael Jordan. With his body-covering tattoos and ever-changing fluorescent hair, Rodman’s sideline antics and celebrated benchings have captivated sports fans as much as his record-breaking on-court performances and earned him a reputation as a rebel with the same penchant for shocking behavior as his on-again off-again squeeze, Madonna. In Bad as I Wanna Be he shares his surprising and candid opinions on everything from fame, money, and race relations, to sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll–and he’ll talk about his life, from going to prison for stealing watches to his daughter, the light of his life. At a time when most celebrities and professional athletes try to control their public personas like politicians and refrain from expressing their true beliefs, Dennis Rodman is a refreshingly unique, uncompromising individual who both transcends his world and refuses to conform to it. Bad as I Wanna Be is as candid, intriguing, and unforgettable as he is.

Baseball at the University of Michigan (Images of Baseball Series)

Baseball at the University of Michigan (Images of Baseball Series)

$21.99

Baseball at the University of Michigan has had a long and rich tradition. Base ball, to use the contemporary vernacular, began as a club sport during the 1860s. By the dawn of the 20th century, the sport had evolved into the most popular spring leisure event in which students participated. Crowds of greater than 500 were not unusual, at a time when enrollment at the university was approximately 2500 students. Each class and college fielded a team. Prominent names in UM baseball history include the legendary Walker brothers, the first African Americans to play major league baseball, and Branch Rickey, who developed the powerful Dodger teams of the 1940s and integrated baseball with the signing of Jackie Robinson. George Sisler, among the greatest in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, began his career as a Michigan pitcher. And of course there was Ray Fisher, who coached Michigan for 38 years. The end of the century was marked by scandal, but it also brought major league stars such as Hal Morris, Jim Abbot and Barry Larkin, as well as David Parrish and Jake Fox, potential stars of the future. In the shadow of UM football and basketball, baseball is sometimes considered the “other” sport. But in terms of excitement and accessibility to the students, it is still “Number One.”
